Why we still talk about the Metaverse in 2025
The metaverse remains relevant for companies and organizations wanting to be ahead in the digital world.
At the day of writing, Meta released Q1 earnings of 2025. Reality Labs, Meta’s unit responsible for the Quest virtual reality headsets and Ray Ban Meta Smart Glasses, reported a loss of USD 4.6 billion.
When CEO Mark Zuckerberg decided to change the name and rebrand the company behind Facebook to Meta, all the hype about the future metaverse broke out. Since late 2020, Reality Labs has reported cumulative losses of more than USD 60 billion.
With losses of this size, how can the metaverse still be relevant today?
Investment continues and new headsets keep coming
The heavy investment in metaverse-related technologies show the strategic importance of immersive, digital environments. Besides Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia and Google keep investing in the development of either wearable devices, the technology to power immersive and collaborative experiences, or the future content itself.
Meta publicly announced that it is working on new VR headsets and smart glasses, and rumors are that Apple is working on a light version of the Vision Pro.
Despite not always being right, the people responsible for investment in these companies seem to have a pretty good sense of direction regarding future technologies.
Work and collaboration are better in the metaverse
Remote work and hybrid collaboration are part of the modern workplace. Meetings on Teams, Zoom and the likes have freed up a lot of time by replacing un-necessary physical meetings or added benefits to what used to be phone calls and conference calls.
The metaverse takes online hybrid collaboration to the next level. Working together in immersive spaces offers more interactive possibilities and a feeling of presence that cannot be matched by other non-physical means. This field will keep evolving.
“Having worked in the XR industry for years, I’ve witnessed firsthand how it’s evolving towards more multi-user experiences. Whether it’s for training or brand engagement, each new multiplayer release brings more people together, interacting in virtual reality. This is exactly what we mean when we talk about the Metaverse. While the term “Metaverse” might change, the vision remains the same – a shared digital space where people connect and collaborate. Mark Zuckerberg and I both see this future clearly, and it’s exciting to be part of this slightly invisible though transformative journey,” says Michael Harboe, CEO of Virsabi.
Data is everywhere – who will utilize it?
Smart glasses on the market today can already give you data about where and when you need it. From products, from buildings, from buses – from whatever you can imagine.

One of the powers of the metaverse is to close the gap between the physical and the digital world. The possibilities for sales, marketing, knowledge, and safety precautions are without boundaries for those who break the code to do this in a fashionable, timely and secure manner.
What is the metaverse?
The metaverse is the future internet. It is where the physical and the digital world are even more entangled than today. But the definition depends a lot on who you ask – just like the definition of the internet: Is it the hardware, the software, the protocols, the services, or the cat videos?
Likewise, the metaverse is a combination of the infrastructure, the hardware devices, and new software and services. Based on the first software and services new ideas and business models will arise – and those at the forefront of this technology have the opportunity of a head start in new lines of business and revenue models.
To some of the major tech companies, this head start is worth billions of dollars. What is it worth to you?
