Metaverse technologies

Today, you can experience the precursors to the metaverse through various technological devices such as the Oculus Rift, Metaquest Pro, Varjo XR and HoloLens or simply through a browser on your smartphone, tablet or computer.

Various technologies are used to build and experience the metaverse, including augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), 3D printing, 3D modeling software, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, big data, robotics, machine learning algorithms, blockchain, cryptocurrency, haptic feedback, the Internet of Things (IoT), and natural language processing (NLP).

The space of the metaverse can contain elements such as avatars (virtual representations of people), 3D objects, video streams, audio streams, interactive text chat messages, and much more.

Precursors to the metaverse

One of the best-known examples of a prediction about the future of the Metaverse can be experienced in the dystopian film Ready Player One from 2018 with the virtual reality world OASIS. The film is based on a short story from 2011, but the very concept of the metaverse was presented in 1992 in the short story Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. So, the idea of a metaverse has been around for several decades.

Another example is The Sandbox, a virtual metaverse where users can play in and build virtual worlds from their own imagination.

Communities” are particularly strong in these Metaverse frontrunner, where users interact with each other and create experiences together. In the multiplayer computer game Roblox, “creators” can own and earn digital currency (NFTs) from their in-game experiences.
